Epidemiological Alert – Increase in dengue cases in the Americas Region – 7 October 2024|7 Oct 2024 |Pan American Health Organization
In the Americas Region, the number of dengue cases recorded during the first half of 2024 exceeded the number of cases historically reported in a year, as compared to all previously recorded years. As of epidemiological week 36 of 2024, 47 countries and territories in the Americas Region have reported 11,732,921 dengue cases; this number is two and half times as high as the number of cases recorded throughout 2023, which was 4,594,823 dengue cases.

Health labour market analysis support tool launched|07 October 2024|African Region
Nairobi, Kenya – The World Health Organization, Regional Office for Africa launched the Health Labour Market Analysis (HLMA) Support Tool to assist countries assess their health workforce education capacity, supply, demand and need for health workers and facilitate integrating health workforce planning into Health Labour Marker Analysis.

Burden of hearing loss in Africa could rise to 54 million by 2030: WHO report|07 October 2024|African Region
About 40 million people live with hearing loss in the African region, but the figure could rise to 54 million by 2030 if urgent measures are not take to address the problem, according to a new World Health Organization (WHO) report.

The Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) calls on Member States to work collaboratively and intersectorally to preserve animal health and protect public health. PAHO/WHO urges Member States to strengthen efforts to implement protocols for the timely detection, notification, and rapid response to outbreaks in animals, as well as for the detection of human cases of avian influenza A(H5N1). In addition, PAHO/WHO encourages the sharing of viruses with WHO Collaborating Centers in both sectors to strengthen risk analysis and to prepare candidate vaccine viruses.

Despite important progress towards integrating eye health into primary health care services in African countries, a dire shortage of financial resources, combined with the concentration of scarce human resources in urban areas and low community awareness, continues to threaten the gains.

Marburg virus disease|11 October 2024|Rwanda
Since the declaration of the outbreak on 27 September and as of 10 October, 15 confirmed cases have recovered, the remaining 30 cases are under care at the designated Marburg treatment center. Health workers from two health facilities in Kigali account for over 80% of confirmed cases. All new confirmed cases reported within the past week, have been associated with the two hospital clusters in Kigali. As of 10 October 2024, a total of 2949 tests for Marburg virus have been conducted, with approximately 200-300 samples being tested daily at the Rwanda Biomedical Center from suspected MVD cases.

Urgent action needed to accelerate mental health progress in African region|10 October 2024|African Region
The African region has made progress over the past decade to strengthen mental health systems, including investments to improve care, health workforce as well as national policies to steer the delivery of vital services. However, the pace of the progress is slow and further efforts are needed to address mental health challenges and ensure well-being.
