研究概要
- We aim to understand how the immune system detects and responds to infectious diseases, and how this knowledge can be applied to the development of more effective vaccines. Our research focuses on the interface between host immunity and pathogen biology, with a particular interest in how iron metabolism, immune signaling, and cellular responses influence vaccine performance and susceptibility to infection.
- Using a range of immunological and molecular biology techniques, we study how immune cells such as macrophages and T cells respond to infection, and how these responses are regulated in different physiological and pathological contexts. A unique focus of our research is the role of iron as a critical factor in both pathogen survival and host immune regulation. We investigate how the manipulation of iron availability can affect immune responses and pathogen growth, aiming to identify novel therapeutic strategies that complement vaccine-induced protection.
- In collaboration with clinical and international partners, we also study the variation of vaccine efficacy across populations. Factors such as nutritional status, genetics, and prior exposure to pathogens can affect how individuals respond to vaccination. By identifying immune correlates of protection and markers of vaccine responsiveness, we aim to support the rational development of vaccines that are more effective across diverse global settings.
- Our goal is to contribute to a global framework for vaccine design that not only targets specific pathogens but also considers the broader immunological and physiological environment of the host. This “Immunological Vaccinology” approach supports the development of next-generation vaccines and immunotherapies, particularly for diseases with high global burden such as malaria, tuberculosis, and emerging viral infections. Professor Drakesmith’s research at Hokkaido University’s Institute for Comprehensive Innovation and Vaccine Research Development aims to foster international collaboration in addressing the urgent need for better vaccines against infectious diseases, especially emerging diseases that pose a global health threat. His expertise and innovative research are integral to advancing the field of vaccinology and immunotherapy.
