High-level delegation visits Nigeria, urges commitments from government|28 February 2025|African Region
Abuja – As Nigeria intensifies efforts to halt the transmission of type 2 variant poliovirus, a high-level delegation from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative(GPEI), visited Abuja, Nigeria, 27-28 February 2025. During the visit, government, traditional leaders, and partners renewed their commitment to overcome remaining challenges to end polio in Nigeria.

In 2024, the Americas Region was again verified as measles-free, while maintaining elimination of rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). However, the recent identification of multiple measles outbreaks and cases, including some fatal ones, in countries and territories of the region, puts this achievement at risk. In view of this situation, the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) calls on Member States to strengthen vaccination, epidemiological surveillance, and rapid response activities. It also recommends implementing active community, institutional and laboratory searches for the early identification of cases, as well as carrying out complementary vaccination activities to close possible immunity gaps.
Epidemiological Update – Avian Influenza A(H5N1) in the Americas Region – 4 March 2025|4 Mar 2025 |Pan American Health Organization
Since 2022 and as of epidemiological week (EW) 8 of 2025, a total of 19 countries and territories in the Americas Region reported 4,713 animal outbreaks of avian influenza A(H5N1) to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), representing 325 additional outbreaks, since the last epidemiological update published by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) on 24 January 2025.
