Professor Hirofumi Sawa , Director of the IVReD and Distinguished Professor at Hokkaido University, has received the 2026 Akiyama Foundation Award presented by the Akiyama Life Science Foundation.
The Akiyama Foundation Award was established in 1991 by the Akiyama Life Science Foundation to recognize and support researchers who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of life sciences in Hokkaido. Please click here for more details.

“Research on the Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Zoonotic Infectious Diseases”
【Reason for the Award】
Professor Sawa has made outstanding contributions to the field of zoonotic infectious diseases through research spanning pathogen discovery and diagnostics, the elucidation of disease mechanisms, and the development of antiviral drugs and vaccines. His work has successfully translated fundamental scientific findings into practical applications that address real-world public health challenges.
He has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed research papers. He has contributed a leading role in advancing infectious disease research and training the next generation of scientists through collaborations with international research institutions, particularly in Africa. His work has also led to practical achievements in infectious disease control, including antiviral drug development through academia–industry collaboration and the development of H5N1 vaccine candidate strains.
In addition, as Director of the IVReD at Hokkaido University, Professor Sawa has provided strong leadership in promoting the research and development of vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics, as well as in building research infrastructure to prepare for future infectious disease emergencies.
In recognition of these exceptional scientific accomplishments and his significant contributions to society, Professor Sawa is highly deserving of this award.
