Epidemiological alert – Intoxications due to chemical substances associated with social media challenges – 18 December 2024|18 Dec 2024 |Pan American Health Organization
In recent months, there has been a significant increase in intoxications associated with the ingestion or inhalation of chemical substances related to challenges posted on social media that encourage the consumption of these substances for recreational or other purposes, mainly among adolescents. The Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) recommends Member States to implement mechanisms to detect intoxications due to substances related to challenges on social media and to promote prevention and awareness strategies to reduce the risks associated with these practices.

The highest number of confirmed cases (61) were reported in the first three epidemiological weeks (week 39-41, from 23 September to 13 October) of the outbreak. This was followed by a sharp decline, with three or less cases reported between epidemiological week 42 (14 to 20 October) and 44 (28 October to 3 November). The last confirmed case was reported on 30 October and the last death on 14 October 2024.

Marburg outbreak in Rwanda declared over|20 December 2024|African Region
Kigali, Rwanda – The outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease was declared over today by the Government of Rwanda with no new cases reported over the last 42 days after the last patient tested negative for the virus twice, as per the usual protocol for ending these types of outbreaks.
