Overview of Research

• Gas molecules such as oxygen, nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide can enter the structural voids of proteins and macromolecules. The gases enable to coordinate with metal atoms present inside as prosthetic groups, thereby altering the structure and conferring function. We aim to elucidate these processes, which are involved in physiological activities or the onset of diseases in vivo. Using mass spectrometry and vibrational spectroscopic approaches, we are challenging to understand mechanisms of diseases and to further translate the ideas to develop therapeutic strategies.
