Brazzaville – The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa has launched a Regional Validation Committee for the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B virus, marking a pivotal moment in ensuring a healthier future for every mother and child across Africa.The Regional Validation Committee has a crucial task of verifying the content, validity and quality of the national validation reports towards the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of the three infections.

Reinforcing expertise in safe and dignified burials during outbreaks|29 November 2024|African Region
In a milestone for regional public health, Dakar hosted its first regional Safe and Dignified Burial (SDB) training, gathering 30 participants from 10 African countries. Organized by the WHO Emergency Hub, the training marks the hub’s emergence as a regional reference centre for strengthening the capacity of national and regional experts in managing public health emergencies.

Epidemiological Alert Human Cases of Avian Influenza A(H5N1) in the Americas Region – 3 December 2024|3 Dec 2024 |Pan American Health Organization
Human cases of avian influenza A(H5) have been reported in the Americas Region since 2022, with an increase in the last two months, including some cases for which the source of infection is unknown. Given this, the Pan American Health Organization / World Health Organization (PAHO / WHO) urges Member States to continue strengthening their capacities for detection, epidemiological investigation, notification, and timely response to human cases of avian influenza A(H5). In addition, PAHO/WHO invites Member States to share virus samples with WHO Collaborating Centers to support risk analysis and candidate vaccine viruses.

Oropouche virus disease|5 December 2024|Region of the Americas
Between 1 January and 25 November 2024, 11 634 confirmed Oropouche cases, including two deaths, have been reported in the Region of the Americas: Bolivia (Plurinational State of) (356 cases), Brazil (9563 cases, including two deaths), Canada (two imported cases), Cayman Island (one imported case), Colombia (74 cases), Cuba (603 cases), Ecuador (two cases), Guyana (two cases), Panama (one case), Peru (936 cases), and the United States of America (94 imported cases). Additionally, imported Oropouche cases have been reported in countries in the European Region (30 cases) (1).

Sierra Leone launches Ebola vaccination drive for frontline health workers|06 December 2024|African Region
Sierra Leone launched a nationwide Ebola vaccination campaign this week to protect 20 000 health workers, traditional healers, community health personnel and other frontline workers. The campaign comes a decade after the devastating 2014–2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa.

Undiagnosed disease|8 December 2024|Democratic Republic of the Congo
Between 24 October and as of 5 December 2024, Panzi health zone in Kwango Province has recorded 406 cases of an undiagnosed disease with symptoms of fever, headache, cough, runny nose and body ache and 31 deaths (Case Fatality Ratio or CFR of 7.6%). The reported cases had a peak in epidemiological week 45 (week ending 9 November 2024). The outbreak is still ongoing. According to a press briefing by the Ministry of Health on 5 December, there have been several additional deaths outside of health facilities (community deaths). These deaths still need to be investigated, characterized (age, gender etc) and verified.
